Credit card fraud prevention for merchants: Addresses
Customers often use different addresses for billing and shipping. It’s even more common for criminals to do so. This is a perfect example of going the extra mile to protect your business, while being mindful of not alienating trustworthy customers. Just because someone asks you to ship a valuable heirloom to Mailboxes, Etc. doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a criminal, but it should catch your attention.
Google Maps and Yahoo Maps both offer a quick solution to help minimize
your risk. It’s easy to see if a place actually exists by checking
these resources. It’s also reasonable to ask for a payment in advance
when there’s a discrepancy between the billing and the shipping
addresses. Fed-Ex, UPS, and the USPS all offer services that require a
signature upon delivery. It might be worth the extra fee.
